Originally, dhamma meant a living rule for gods, humans, and animals. After realising this, he was enlightened and immune to life's anguish. Gotama became Buddha. This approach might help his students. If people respected Gotama the man, he'd be diverted from his task, and the cult may produce unjust dependence.
