He has an axe too heavy for him, a lantern that will not go out, and a mountain standing between him and his mother.
When the heavenly soldiers come down from the sky, Chenxiang is seven years old. His mother presses her lantern into his hands - and then the mountain closes over her.
What follows is a boy who grows up in a hurry: a father who cannot follow him, a road that keeps bending him back, and an old axe buried in a hillside, waiting for someone stubborn enough to lift it.
A bilingual story, English and Simplified Chinese on every page. Read it twice - once for the adventure, once to hear the words in another language.
Inside this book:
- A complete Chinese legend retold for young readers - the Lotus Lantern
- English and Simplified Chinese side by side on every spread
- Full-color illustrations painted in a Chinese ink-and-wash style
- A mother-and-child story that ends where it began: with a lantern, lit
Ages 4-8 · Full color throughout · 8.5 × 8.5 in · Plain-language retelling of a public-domain Chinese folktale
Some mountains are made of stone. This one is made of rules. And rules can be broken by a child who loves someone enough.
