John Cabot begins his 1497 journey from Bristol, England in a direct line to Cape Breton. Fog from the Grand Banks obscures his vision of Newfoundland's south coast. After a short landfall in Cape Breton, he surveys that coastline in both directions before continiuing toward St. Paul's Island in the Cabot Strait. From there, his crew spots Cape Ray and the Long Range Mountains. Sailing along the southwest coast of Newfoundland, Cabot names Cape St. George and observes the mountain range of the Lewis Hills, in the far distance. Concluding that they have found another large island, he turns back towards Cape Ray, follows the coastline east to Green Island and then returns to England after an approximately 97 day voyage.
