Books vs Bots

Artificial intelligence has entered the classroom. Will it make students smarter-or simply more efficient at avoiding thought? In Books vs Bots, Tooba Rana Rajput and Kaleem Ullah Ihsan examine one of the most urgent questions facing education today: how can schools embrace the power of generative AI without sacrificing the deep, effortful reading that builds critical thinkers and ethical leaders?Drawing on learning theory, cognitive science, intelligent tutoring research, and the latest studies on generative AI, the authors argue that AI does not make teachers less essential-it changes what they are essential for. As teachers shift from transmitters of content to designers of learning, mentors, curators, and ethical guides, students gain unprecedented access to patient, personalised support. Yet they also face a quiet danger: cognitive offloading, where the tool does the thinking that real learning requires. The evidence is sobering. Unrestricted access to AI assistants can boost practice performance while harming later exam results. Frequent AI use is associated with reduced critical thinking. AI summaries offer conclusions-but books offer reasoning, doubt, style, and the time in which a mind changes. This book makes a bold case: reading is not an old-fashioned add-on to AI education. It is the foundation on which good use of AI stands. Through five practical commitments-book first, tutor not answer machine, transparency, teacher-led design, and equity-schools can prepare graduates who are critical, ethical, well-read, and ready to lead in a global society.Because the choice isn't made by the technology. It's made by teachers, school leaders, and policymakers-through the everyday decisions they take about tasks, time, and assessment.
