Ben Jonson and Elizabethan Music

"Ben Jonson and Elizabethan Music" is a scholarly exploration of the deep interconnections between the literary output of one of England's greatest dramatists and the musical culture of his time. Willa McClung Evans provides a meticulous analysis of how Ben Jonson's poetry and plays were influenced by, and conversely influenced, the vibrant musical traditions of the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean periods.

The work focuses heavily on the technical aspects of Jonson's lyrics, examining how his verse was structured for musical setting and how he collaborated with the leading composers of the era. A significant portion of the study is dedicated to the court masques, where music, dance, and poetry combined to create a multi-sensory spectacle for the nobility. Evans investigates the auditory environment of Jonson's world, illustrating how the playwright utilized sound and rhythm to elevate his dramatic narratives.

By bridging the gap between literature and musicology, "Ben Jonson and Elizabethan Music" offers invaluable insights into the collaborative nature of the Renaissance arts. It remains a vital resource for readers interested in the history of English theater, music history, and the evolution of the lyric form. The study emphasizes Jonson's enduring legacy as a writer who understood the power of harmony between the spoken word and the musical note.
