With a unique visual style that uses drawing as a tool to address the tragic banality of historical images, documents, and texts, Fernando Bryce (b. 1965) is one of the most important South American artists working today. Armed with only pen and ink, Bryce examines how visual and written media create and convey a perception of a country, a people, or an historical event through reproducing - by hand - entire archives of material, from declassified government documents to tourist and holiday brochures. By physically reproducing these documents, Bryce uses art to question the credibility of the media and unlock the arbitrary nature and power of his sources. This magnificently illustrated volume brings together Bryce's acclaimed series "Americas", in which he investigates the history of Pan-American relations during the 1950s and 1960s.
