For 35 years, Li Laing lived in the United States without legal status, ever since he was 14 years old. His youth and adulthood were spent in the shadows-navigating survival, prison, rejection, and the crushing fear of deportation. He carried the weight of being unwanted by the only country he had ever really known as home.

But his immigration status wasn't his only struggle. Deep inside, Li was living with another truth: he was a transgender man. Choosing to transition gave him freedom, but it also exposed him to new battles-humiliating laws, court rejections, and a society not ready to accept him.

On top of these challenges came unbearable personal losses. First, the death of his mother. Then, years later, he lost his oldest sister after her long fight with cancer. And finally, the devastating suicide of his younger brother. Each loss cut deeper, threatening to break him completely.

Yet Li's story is not one of defeat-it's one of resilience. Step by step, against all odds, he fought to reclaim his identity, to live authentically, and to rise after every fall.
