A Wiltshire Parson and His Friends

"A Wiltshire Parson and His Friends" is an illuminating collection of biographical accounts and personal correspondence centered on William Lisle Bowles, the influential poet and clergyman who played a significant role in the development of the English Romantic movement. As the vicar of Bremhill in Wiltshire, Bowles maintained a vast network of literary and social connections that shaped the cultural fabric of his time.

This work provides a detailed look into the life of the man whose "Fourteen Sonnets" famously inspired a young Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Through a curated selection of letters and records, the text explores Bowles's relationships with major literary figures, including William Wordsworth, Robert Southey, and Richard Brinsley Sheridan. These documents offer rare insights into the personal characters, poetic theories, and daily lives of the giants of British literature during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Scholars and enthusiasts of the Romantic era will find this book an invaluable resource for understanding the interconnected nature of early nineteenth-century intellectual circles. It serves as a testament to the enduring influence of a modest parson whose poetic sensibilities helped usher in a new era of artistic expression.
