A Walk Through Hell

IN DETROIT, THE SINS OF THE PAST DON'T STAY BURIED. THEY JUST WAIT FOR THE FLOOD.
It has been raining for three weeks in the Motor City. The 2008 recession has gutted Detroit, leaving behind foreclosed homes, desperate citizens, and a bankrupt police department struggling to keep the peace.
For Detective Thomas Kane, the relentless storm is the least of his problems. Ten years ago, Kane made a catastrophic choice to protect his career, burying the evidence of a horrific, theatrical serial killer known only as the "Inferno." The killings stopped, but the guilt cost Kane his marriage and his peace of mind.
Now, the monster has returned.
When a corrupt city councilman is found drowned in the freezing, toxic mud of the abandoned Packard Automotive Plant-his chest carved with the word Contrapasso-Kane and his partner, Detective Jennifer Sumner, are thrust into a nightmare that defies logic. The killer is meticulously recreating the Nine Circles of Dante's Hell, targeting the untouchable "City Fathers" who have preyed on Detroit's most vulnerable.
As the city descends into a panicked frenzy and copycat vigilantes take to the flooded streets, Kane and Sumner find themselves fighting a war on two fronts. Internal Affairs, led by Sumner's abusive ex-husband, is circling like vultures, looking for a scapegoat.
But the true terror isn't hiding in the crumbling ruins of the city. The killer is a ghost in the machine-someone who knows the police patrol routes, who reads their classified reports, and who is orchestrating the executions from inside the precinct itself.
To save his estranged daughter from becoming the final sacrifice in the Ninth Circle, Kane must descend into the darkest, coldest depths of the city. He must confront the very corruption he helped conceal, and he must finally face the devil waiting for him on the ice.
