A Parent's Guide

Ever felt helpless about how to help your teen who is having suicidal thoughts, or just left the hospital after your teen had cut or attempted suicide?
Every year high schools in America are included in a survey named the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. In 2021 42% of youth reported persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, 22% seriously considered attempting suicide, 18% made a suicide plan, and 10% attempted suicide.
If you are a parent, these statistics can be scary. I hope to share some of the evidence-based tools to help manage suicidal thoughts in teens. As a child psychiatrist working in a tertiary care center, I wish that I could meet the parents of teens who are struggling and together we can try to prevent suicide. The sad reality is that we end up meeting families after the teen attempted suicide.
