A Life of Song

"A Life of Song" is the captivating autobiography of Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, one of the most significant figures in the preservation of Scottish musical heritage. Best known for her extensive collection and arrangement of Gaelic songs from the Hebrides, Kennedy-Fraser offers an intimate look at a life dedicated to the power of the human voice and the endurance of traditional melodies.

The narrative traces her journey from a musical upbringing within the celebrated Kennedy family of singers to her transformative expeditions to the remote islands of Scotland's west coast. Through her eyes, readers witness the painstaking process of documenting oral traditions that were on the verge of vanishing, capturing the essence of the sea, the land, and the rhythmic labor of the islanders. More than just a personal memoir, this work serves as a vital historical record of the Celtic Revival and the broader folk music movement of the early twentieth century.

Combining personal anecdotes with profound reflections on the nature of art and song, Kennedy-Fraser presents a compelling portrait of a woman who bridged the gap between academic musicology and the living breath of folk tradition. This book is an essential read for enthusiasts of Scottish history, folk music scholars, and anyone moved by the intersection of culture and performance.
