Daniel Defoe's A Journal of the Plague Year is a chilling, semi-fictionalized account of the 1665 Great Plague of London. Masquerading as a real-life memoir, it follows an everyday citizen, "H.F.", who stays in the city to chronicle the visceral horrors, societal chaos, and mass casualties of a devastating epidemic.
Though written more than 50 years after the epidemic, Defoe's prodigious research and incorporation of precise street names, mortality statistics, and eyewitness anecdotes create a harrowing illusion of reality.
The narrative vividly details the severe realities of the era, including panicked quarantines, mass burials, the rise of fake cure peddlers, and the strict civic measures taken to contain the bubonic plague.
The book captures the full emotional spectrum of a quarantined city-from fatalistic despair and panic to resilience and community kindness.
