A History of Spanish Literature

"A History of Spanish Literature" offers a comprehensive and scholarly examination of the evolution of letters on the Iberian Peninsula. Written by the esteemed scholar Ernest Mérimée, this foundational work traces the development of Spanish literary expression from its medieval roots through the flourishing Golden Age and into the early 20th century. The text meticulously explores various genres, including epic poetry, the picaresque novel, and the height of Spanish drama, providing critical analysis of monumental figures such as Miguel de Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Pedro Calderón de la Barca.

The work contextualizes major literary movements within the broader socio-political history of Spain, illustrating how cultural shifts influenced the written word. From the heroic verses of the "Poema de Mio Cid" to the sophisticated inquiries of the Enlightenment and the emotional depth of Romanticism, this survey remains an essential resource for students and enthusiasts of Romance languages. It provides a lucid overview of the stylistic transitions and intellectual currents that have shaped one of Europe's most vibrant and enduring literary traditions, making it an invaluable guide for understanding the legacy of Spanish thought and art.
