A Consequence of War

Duke Orsat had wanted a war. He hadn't cared if his soldiers were willing or conscripted when he marched them away to their fate. The potential of the far reaching consequences of his actions never even crossed his mind as all the women had been left to fend for themselves. Six years passed before finally; a message was delivered that the war was over. If that was true, the villagers had wondered, where were their men? No one came home until one day a lone, badly wounded soldier arrived on horseback, carrying grim news for Keirrah and the town of Windhorse. Orsat's war might be over, but a new war was coming for them! Their way of life would never be the same. As well as being a local leader, Keirrah's father Brin, had been a smith and an armorer for the town of Windhorse and his only daughter had followed in his footsteps. When he too had been forced to join the army, Keirrah had begun to fill the void his leaving had created, and she was increasingly asked to take on many of his former duties. Now the town elders were turning to Keirrah to lead them through their most difficult times. Her mother's help was required to assist with the town's defenses and although Magda was more than capable, few trusted the strange and mysterious woman that Brin had made his bride so many years before. With more dire revelations to come, what could Keirrah do? What would you do?
