This volume systematically records approximately 1,600 translated works by more than 1,000 modern playwrights from 20 Western countries-the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Greece, Australia, Denmark, the Netherlands, Iceland, Finland, and Portugal-together with over 900 distinct plays staged in China between 1907 and 2020. It stands as the most complete and detailed database of its kind in the Chinese-speaking world.

Originating from archival card records begun in 1981 at the Central Academy of Drama and refined over more than forty years of continuous collecting, verification, and digital research, key findings have been published in leading CSSCI-indexed journals, including Theatre Arts (Shanghai Theatre Academy) and Drama (Central Academy of Drama).

Organized by country and alphabetical order of playwrights, each entry provides details of translations, translators, publication and staging information.
