The pious Father Greg Pilkington (Linus Roache) arrives in Liverpool to work with a rather less devout holyman (Tom Wilkinson), who is conducting an affair with his housekeeper Maria (Cathy Tyson). Pilkington disapproves of his fellow priest's behaviour, but is plagued with self-doubt about his own personal conduct, finding it difficult to square his own homosexuality with his strict religious beliefs. This self-examination becomes more urgent when his relationship with a young man is made public, and the pot is further stirred when he discovers that one of his congregation is a child abuser, but is bound from intervening by the confidentiality of confession.
