Vegetarians

This series examines arguments related to vegetarianism and veganism and their development in the public sphere, media, historical imagery, and geographies. Vegetarian and vegan practices have gradually become embedded in mainstream culture, arising from several shifts in the social, political, cultural, and economic landscape, along with the reinforcement of discursive endeavors that legitimize or delegitimize these practices. The first part focuses on specific geographical and cultural contexts, from early twentieth-century Italy, Serbia, and Israel to Islam and the foundational principles of the Yuga Sutras. In the second part, the author explores the embodied experiences and discursive strategies, particularly the political identities and existential consequences that arise from consuming or abstaining from meat. The third part examines the sites, aims, and outcomes of engaging in vegetarianism (or veganism) as a transformative practice, from plant studies to ecology, that should revolutionize our value hierarchies and, consequently, our future.
