I only have their shadows with me, but they are living shadows that come and go in my memory, and everything that was and passed is in these living shadows an immortal being, and just as an inspired poet sees the entire words of nature translated into the language of his eyes, I have come to see in her abandonment the nature of Hassan Faten translated in its entirety into the language of my thought. It had in me an appearance of beauty, and with it the foolishness and madness of hope, and then my submission to it was of no use to me, so abandoning it replaced me with an appearance of majesty, and with it the dignity and sanity of despair.
