Have you ever noticed that apart from having the common thread of providing guidance for everyday living, most verses in the Book of Proverbs are not really connected to the others around them? What I mean is that almost every verse by itself is a thought to ponder, or a principle by which to live. God inspired Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, and definitely someone with a lion's share of lived experiences, to write most of the Book of Proverbs.Just like the Book of Proverbs provides us with practical advice for life, so too the elders in the village where I grew up had sayings that were meant to give us guidance for life. My mother was one of those elders. Her encouragement and warnings to us came in oft-repeated sayings. These sayings were generally known to all the villagers, and throughout the country, but some were unique to Mommy. These sayings were instilled in us until they became a part of our everyday vernacular.A Proverb a Day (And Lessons I Learned from My Mother) is a fusion of biblical principles for daily living and Guyanese culture. It primarily takes one verse from each of the thirty-one chapters of the Book of Proverbs, provides an autobiographical anecdote that illustrates the proverb, and couples it with a saying from Mommy. These three elements comprise this thirty-one-day devotional. May you find inspiration, guidance, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness, and be complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work as you study and meditate on a proverb each day (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
