Mare's Tale

The mare has seen it all from her stall in the barn -- decades of horses arriving broken, and the people who show up right behind them, just as lost. She remembers the day Joe walked up the long drive from the highway, a duffel bag on his back and ten years at sea behind him, looking for nothing more than the smell of a horse and a place to belong. She remembers the gelding named Tommy, and the woman named Sandra who brought him into all of their lives. She remembers Side by Side -- a rescue built from one couple's grief over horses no one else wanted, and the twelve stalls that filled faster than anyone expected.Told entirely from the mare's own memory, The Mare's Tale moves through years of rescue, rehabilitation, and the quiet, stubborn work of trust rebuilding itself -- in horses who'd been starved and abandoned, and in the humans who came to the barn carrying their own kind of duffel bag. It's a story about what a herd really is, about the ones who stay long enough to become family, and about the grace that shows up looking like clouds on the horizon -- the ones old-timers call mares' tails. For anyone who has ever loved a horse, run a rescue, or believed an animal could see straight through to what a person is carrying, this is a story worth saddling up for.
