Distant Signals

Remote Signals is a novel created by the author based on firsthand interviews conducted during the Wenchuan Earthquake. The story centers around female college student Tan Xiaoqi and focuses on the group of teachers and students affected by the earthquake. When the major earthquake strikes, Jinxiu Middle School becomes the epicenter. Principal Tan Hengjie, in an attempt to protect several students, is trapped under the ruins. Despite their dire circumstances, they do not resign themselves to fate. Tan Hengjie encourages the children to use their wits and find a way to signal to the outside world that they are still alive.In a parallel storyline, Tan Hengjie's daughter, college student Tan Xiaoqi, learns of the earthquake and immediately sets out on her journey back home. Along the way, Tan Xiaoqi forms an alliance with soon-to-be-retired soldier Ji Songqiao, the carefree and laid-back "e;Flowered Grid,"e; and bus driver Lao Zhang. After traveling through mountains and rivers, they finally arrive at Jinxiu Middle School. During the rescue of the trapped teachers and students, scene after scene moves everyone to tears. Teachers choose to sacrifice themselves to save the children, and the children display remarkable strength in the face of disaster. Ultimately, Tan Hengjie and Ji Songqiao sacrifice their lives to save the children, and Tan Xiaoqi finally understands her father...This novel not only portrays the bravery and selflessness of teachers and students during the earthquake but also highlights the importance of family bonds and the strength derived from unity and cooperation in the face of adversity.
