Life offers some unexpected twists and turns, but none more so than with young David Winslow. Taken from an upper-class, cultured home in Boston, Massachusetts, to provincial Sinclair, Maine, after his mother's remarriage, he and his mother suffer the pains of prejudice from the local population.David attempts to hide the hurt from his mother after he is teased and bullied not only by students at school but also by the general population. It is when the son of the most prominent family in Sinclair is killed that David finds himself in the grip of misfortune.
