When the great powers of Europe declare war on one another, a young Henry Krit is one of the first to enlist in the Kaiser's Army. He survives the killing fields of the Western Front but does not make it out unscathed. He is wounded, captured and sent to England as a prisoner of war only allowed to return home when the last shot has been fired. The country he returns to is not the one he left four years earlier. Germany is in fiscal ruin. Henry too, is not the same. He cannot return to the quiet existence he once led and falls into the life of a rootless wanderer, riding freight trains and living in the tent camps that spring up next to the tracks as the great depression settles over Europe. The struggles of the trenches have been replaced with a struggle to simply keep himself fed.Fortune finally shines its light when he lands a job with a start-up automobile firm tasked with building a car for the masses - a Peoples Car. The start-up is headed by an automotive visionary named Ferdinand Porsche and he would not disappoint. With some unwitting help from Henry, Porsche designs a car like no other. The Volkswagen Type 1 is an instant success. A huge factory is constructed with it in mind but just as the first units begin coming off the line a second Great War breaks out. Production of the Peoples Car comes to an abrupt halt and its factory is retooled and made to produce the weapons of war. The new mission puts the automotive facility and everyone in it directly in the sights of Allied Bomber Command. Like Henry the Volkswagen will become a victim of war. If not for the determined efforts of Henry, the odd little car that he had envisioned would die an unwarranted death. He would risk all to save his dream and become the unlikely champion of an unassuming automobile that would take the world by storm and become a true legend of its time.
